Using the Point System: Determining If Your AC Is Ready for Retirement

How is your air conditioner doing? Does it make you smile when you get home to the cool, conditioned air? Or are you constantly frustrated or worried by the bills that are inevitably coming your way?

This is an unfortunate reality for many homeowners. But a solution is on the horizon. We’d consider AC replacement in Grapevine, TX as a great solution for many homeowners who are nervous about the state of their cooling technology.

Don’t worry, before we recommend this, we want customers to look at the point system we’ve devised below to determine if they’re ready for AC replacement or not.

The Point System

Use the point system by following along and checking off any of these categories that apply to you or your AC system. Add up the points at the end and see your results. This will help give you an idea of what you’re looking at in terms of an AC replacement.

End of the System’s Lifespan: 4 Points

Air conditioners are designed to last 10 to 15 years in age. Beyond this, you run the risk of components failing, ruining your the air conditioner’s efficiency and reducing its cooling power.

We’d recommend anyone who has an AC system 10 years old or older to get it replaced, or at least consider replacement. If this sounds like your system, add 4 points to your score.

Frequent Repairs: 2 Points

Repairs on a yearly basis or more frequently are considered “frequent repairs.” This is usually a side effect of something broader happening inside your system, like a botched installation or unmaintained components. If this is your system, add 2 points to your score.

Poor Efficiency: 2 Points

Does your system run up the bill on a monthly basis much higher than it used to? If so, add 2 points to your score.

Temperature Issues: 1 Point

An AC system should always meet the temperature threshold on your thermostat. If you find that it’s struggling or you need to keep fiddling with the thermostat, then add 1 point to your score.

Strange Sounds: 1 Point

Strange or uncomfortable noises warrant at least a repair visit, if not a full system replacement. Add a point to your score.

The Verdict

Let’s see where you landed on the chart!

  • 0 to 1 Points: Great job! Your air conditioner is in awesome shape and is perfectly ready for the seasons ahead. Just make sure you get it maintained on a regular basis.
  • 2 to 3 Points: Consider repairing your air conditioner if you scored in this range. Something is wrong but it might not warrant replacement yet.
  • 4 to 6 Points: It’s time to start thinking about replacing your air conditioner. Evaluate your options so you won’t end up surprised and will be ready to go when necessary.
  • 7+ Points: Replacement is likely imminent at this point. But we’ll be there to help every step of the way.
